Cs Dénia proposes to create a DNA registry and a cemetery for pets

16 2021 April - 09: 45

The municipal group Ciudadanos-Dénia has submitted motions related to animal welfare, for voting and approval in the next Ordinary Plenary.

The first proposal focuses on carrying out a DNA registry for pets. Currently, the best known identification system in our pets is the microchip, but new technological advances have emerged that allow us to complement the microchip with our dog's DNA. Estefanía Schwamb, councilor of the municipal group Ciudadanos has indicated that "The main advantage that our pet's DNA provides us is that it is unique, it cannot be removed, changed or erased".

It should be remembered that the Municipal Animal Ordinance of the Dénia City Council, in its art. 20 indicates that the municipal registry is mandatory and was approved on April 14, 1994, requiring an exhaustive review of it, since its gap with the current reality is evident. The mayor highlights that "this unique advantage, with respect to the microchip, provides us and our pets with multiple advantages directly, such as the location of the owners, even if they eliminate the chip, and the one that most affects all citizens, the analysis of faeces not collected on public roads, which has achieved a dissuasive effect in municipalities where this technique is already applied ”.

Cemetery for animals

The second proposal, also related to animal welfare, the creation of a cemetery for pets in our city.

Susana Mut, spokesperson for the municipal group Ciudadanos has explained that "these pet cemeteries contain a meaning very similar to human cemeteries, you can find burials with very elaborate aesthetics and even baroque in their ornamental preciousness and you can also find" common graves " . Many of these cemeteries have facilities for cremation and collection of ashes. " By law, it is forbidden to make a hole anywhere to deposit the remains of the animal. This is done to avoid burial errors that lead to public health problems as the body decomposes, such as the promotion of disease or the contamination of underground aquifers. Do not forget that some animals, such as scavengers, can detect remains from several kilometers away.

However, it is a reality that many pet owners do not comply with this law, since it is difficult for them to dispose of their pet remains without more. It is for this reason, that we have the obligation, as a corporation, to provide citizens with the possibility of burying their animal companions, in a dignified way and within the law.

"Areas such as the Bosc de Diana, fit perfectly into this approach to a companion animal cemetery, spacious, with enough space for enjoyment with the family, and at the same time for recognition of those pets that, on many occasions, mean so much to many people ”, said the mayor Estefanía Schwamb.
