The Dénia Hospital celebrates its First Conference on Minority Diseases

  • El Hospital de Dénia, from the Ribera Health Group, will celebrate its First Conference on Minority Diseases tomorrow, which will address the diagnosis and treatment of uncommon, minority or rare pathologies.

The symposium will begin with the presentation of the Dr. Patricia Martín Rico, Head of Internal Medicine and Director of the Medical Clinic Area of ​​the Dénia Health Department -DSD-. Next the Dr Edgar Alania, Attached to the Cardiology Service of the DSD, will speak about the Fabry disease, a hereditary pathology that affects 1 in 40.000 men and 1 in 20.000 women, who cannot produce an enzyme that helps them break down or eliminate globotriaosylceramine, a fatty substance in the cells, which is why organs such as the kidneys, the heart or the brain can be damaged.

Another rare diseases that their professionals will deal with is Left-handed , a metabolic disorder also hereditary and rare in which an enzyme is once again the protagonist. Its deficiency causes the accumulation of fats -lipids- normally in the bone marrow, spleen and liver. The Dr. Susana Olivera, Associate of the Internal Medicine Service, will be in charge of exposing the theory and practice of said pathology.

For his part, the Head of the Neurology Service of the DSD, Dr. Alexandre García Escrivà, will address the amyloidosis, a rare disease that is triggered when the protein called amyloid accumulates in the organs, preventing their proper functioning.

Finally Dr. Angel Mateu, also from the Neurology Service, will talk about the Pompe disease which, if it debuts, does so in adults over 60 years of age with a previous pathology and which is characterized by muscle weakness caused by the accumulation of glycogen in striated, cardiac and smooth muscle tissues.

The presentations will end with an address by the Dr. Cristina Cuesta, from the Pharmacy Service, which will present the role of the Hospital Pharmacy in the treatment of these pathologies. The closure and conclusions of the meeting will be carried out by the Dr. Jaime Poquet, Head of the DSD Pharmacy Service.
