The SEP-CV denounces the increase in sick leave in Dénia in the last five years

13 December 2021 - 10: 42

The Union of Public Employees of the Valencian Community (SEP-CV) affirms that the absenteeism indicators of the Dénia City Council have not stopped worsening since 2016. According to the institution's transparency portal, since that date, each year has been worse than the previous one until practically doubling the figures of five years ago.

This increase cannot be attributed solely to the incidence of the pandemic because, in 2019, before the start of the health crisis, there was already an increase of 25% compared to 2018.

In the attached graph, it can be seen how leaves for common contingencies (ILT) increase progressively, above all, but also those caused by accidents at work (AT).

The figures translate into 11.323 lost working days in 2020, compared to 5.844 in 2016, and represent that more than 40% of the workforce had an ILT episode in 2020. The situation entails an increase in direct spending for this cause greater than 500.000 euros per year, although with indirect costs the economic impact could
exceed one million euros per year.

Apart from the monetary cost, these indicators reveal a clear deterioration in the health of municipal workers, which should be protected. The municipal absenteeism rate exceeds 10%, when the average for public administration according to INE data is 7%, and the average for private and public employment as a whole is 5%. A few years ago Dénia received public subsidies for its low level of absenteeism within its sector, while now it leads the occupational health rankings, but in a negative sense.

The SEP understands that this increase shows that neither the Health and Safety Committee, in which the SEP is not represented, nor the Occupational Risk Prevention Plan are working as they should, at least in the last 6 years. In this sense, the Union believes that it is essential to carry out a diagnosis to know the multiple causes of this negative trend in the health of workers and to take measures on the risk factors to prevent them. It is necessary to know, for example, to what extent factors such as the work environment can influence these results.

It is also essential to always act in a comprehensive way, both on the physical and mental health of workers, and in a very special way in the current context of pandemic, with the increase in associated biopsychosocial risks, which especially affect essential public sector workers.
