Turtles and 105 eggs found on Marineta beach in Dénia

12 September 2024 - 09: 36

Yesterday Wednesday around 22:40 p.m., the Marine and Fisheries Environmental Service received notice of the presence of newborn turtles in the Marineta Beach (about 100 m south of the 'chiringuito', whose managers were the ones who alerted of its presence).

Toni Martínez, from the Marine and Fisheries Environmental Service, immediately went to the site, along with his son Álex, who located the nest, and Héctor Villar, from La Marina El Portet and a regular assistant in the operations. The nest was monitored until the arrival of Jesús Tomás, a biologist from the University of Valencia, and staff from Oceanogràfic and the UPV.

A total of 105 eggs were found, of which 98 were successful. The Oceanogràfic collected the 9 turtles still found on the beach, which will spend their first year of life in L'Arca del Mar before being released later in Dénia.

Jesús Tomás stressed that "in no other Spanish city have there been six nests in two years. Dénia is the 'city of turtles'."
