22 September 2021 - 09: 10

After almost three months of high levels of contagion in Dénia, the capital of the Marina Alta can end the wave of coronavirus. In the last two updates, corresponding to the last seven days, not a single contagion has been added in the city, so the cumulative incidence has fallen below 25 infections per 100.000 inhabitants, returning to the situation again. normal.

What has become known as the fifth wave, really is the fourth that Dénia and the Marina Alta have suffered. The previous one, during the months of April and May, had no effect on our region. The last suffered here was, therefore, the third, between January and February, which came as a result of the Christmas holidays.

That third wave It was the one that had the greatest impact in Dénia, reaching record figures. It started in mid-December and the situation did not return to normal until the second half of February. In it there were days in which more than 200 infections new. The vaccination process was still in its infancy, so family gatherings triggered infections in the area.

After several months of calm, where COVID was kept at bay by tough restrictions and a very slow de-escalation that did not end until the arrival of summer. However, when the restrictions disappeared and tourism with its agglomerations was reactivated, the coronavirus returned to make an appearance.

Evolution of the fourth (or fifth) wave of coronavirus

June 29 was the last update with pure data from new normal, registering only three new cases. From July Everything changed, with the number of new infections growing rapidly in a wave that recorded its worst data during the second half of July, repeatedly exceeding one hundred new infections.

However, even though that was the peak, it still took several weeks for cases to drop completely. They succeeded different spikes during August that caused the wave to last longer than those experienced. In fact, it has been the longest suffered in Dénia, lasting almost 3 months.

Will it be the last wave?

A couple of weeks ago, the director of the Center for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, Fernando Simon, showed his optimism for the coming months of the pandemic. According to Simon, this may be the last big wave of coronavirus to live in Spain thanks to the percentage of immunized.

However, he does not rule out that there are more waves, but affirms that they will not be like those experienced to date.
