The hermitage of Santa Paula is part of the set of hermitages that, during the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries, were built in the Christian town of Dénia. Where is it and how to get there

The hermitage of Santa Paula is located in the game Vessanes, a residential area that does not have services such as restaurants or shops in its surroundings.

Access to the hermitage of Santa Paula can be done on foot, by bicycle or by private vehicle, since there is no public transport that goes there. The starting point is the Plaza Jaume I, from where we will look for the Torrecremada car park and cross it to the Camí del Saladar, which we will have to travel for 500 meters until we reach a crossroads where we will deviate along the Camí de Santa Paula (left ). For 100 meters we will not leave the asphalt road, and after 900 meters of zigzagging path we will enter a path that will be on our right and that will lead us directly to the hermitage.

The hermitage of Santa Paula is closed to the public throughout the year except on Santa Paula's day, a festival that is celebrated every January 26, in which the building opens its doors all day from 9 in the morning.

History

Some documents from 1404 credit Catherine Bas as the founder of the hermitage, making possible with her efforts the construction of the building that originally formed part of a female monastery.

Architecture

It is a rectangular, uninave building with three sections separated by two slightly pointed diaphragm arches and a flat head. The arches, built with local sandstone ashlars, start from the pavement and from interior buttresses.

Although it is currently accessed from the west, the documentation works prior to the restoration speak of an open access portal in the northern wall, in the first section that dates from the foundation of the building and that would be related to the connection with the monastery, located north of the hermitage.

Festival and Pilgrimage of Santa Paula

In the onomástica of its patron saint, each 26 January, the shrine receives pilgrims and devotees all day access to the chapel to pray ofrendar candles and holy.

From early are installed several stops mode "porrat"with typical sweets of the area such as caramel apples, liquorice, sugar cane or arrop i carvings, and the festeros present the visitors with mistela and peanuts.

With the advent of pilgrimage, the devotees enter the hermitage to attend the mass in which the joys are read to the saint, and at the end, donuts, coca maría and mistela are distributed among the attendees.

After a brotherhood meal among the pilgrims, and at the end of the day, they go to the Santa Llúcia Residence for the Elderly to visit their elders and distribute typical sweets.
