The Montgó-Dénia Scientific Station continues with university training activities

Back to the new normal, last Friday, October 1, around 40 students of the Marine Ecology subject of the degree of Marine Sciences of the University of Alicante traveled to the coasts of Dénia as part of their training activity.

During the morning, at different points in the beaches They learned to carry out zooplankton and phytoplankton samples, both with nets and with suction pumps, to take physical-chemical data from sea water such as turbidity, pH, salinity, chlorophyll, oxygen concentration and RedOx potential and the measurement of currents by means of the use of drift buoys, among others.

In the afternoon, their stay was complemented with a visit to the Montgó-Dénia Scientific Station where, in addition to learning about the facilities and the research that is being carried out, they were able to observe biological samples (zooplankton and phytoplankton) and microplastics in the magnifying glass and microscope. extracted from various samples from the Valencian and Dianense coastlines, as well as the permanent collection of jellyfish at the Station. Finally, they were given a theoretical-practical class on oceanographic instrumentation (CTD, Niskin bottle, plankton fractionator, etc.).

After more than a year with the training activities paralyzed, and with this return to normality post COVID-19, in addition to resuming the training at the university level of Degree, Master and Doctorate in various environmental and marine disciplines, it will be offered to students of different schools and institutes in Dénia and the region the opportunity to be scientists for a day with a program to bring science closer to students and also to citizens. These activities will be complemented with days open to the general public throughout this academic year 2021-22.
