The pedestrianization of the street Campos obtains the 3rd prize for Sustainable Mobility in the Valencian Community that has been awarded today. The event was attended by the mayor of Dénia, Vicent Grimalt, who has received the award from the Regional Minister of Territories and Mobility, Arcadi Spain.

The City Council of Dénia presented this initiative to the contest, of autonomic scope, within the category of medium-sized cities that recognizes the good practices implemented by Valencian councils and institutions and entities to promote sustainable mobility.

Specifically, in the case of city councils, among other aspects, "measures that improve walking conditions, such as the implementation of streets or pedestrian areas", "the promotion of regulated parking or deterrent parking" and also this year, taking into account the context of the pandemic, "the actions of adaptation of the public space to a mobility conditioned by the situation generated by COVID-19". All these conditions, as explained by the consistory, converge in the decision to close the traffic of Marqués de Campo.

"Now there are 12.000 square meters for people"

The candidacy proposal submitted to the 2021 SEMcv Awards highlights that the "recovery of Marqués de Campo street for people, with the closure to traffic and the elimination of surface parking, it has led to definitively gaining a central space of great pedestrian quality ", also located in the historic center of the city and encouraging" the commercial, hospitality, social meeting and walk space of many generations of dianenses and visitors ".

The performance includes Glorieta del País Valencià and Calle del Marqués de Campo to the port, "a total of 12.000 square meters now allocated to people", highlighted the Councilor for Territory, Mr. Josep Ripoll.

The award-winning action is integrated, as the document presenting the candidacy explains, "in the progressive process, begun more than 20 years ago, of converting the historic center of the city into an area for pedestrians" and it is also highlighted that pedestrianization Marqués de Campo season already took place on holiday periods and weekends. "The street was already closed to traffic an average of 100 days a year."

The definitive step occurred with the arrival of the 'new normal', andn May 2020, "which accelerated the closure of Marqués de Campo to traffic for reasons of security and prevention of COVID and to be able to reconcile pedestrian safety with the reopening of the hotel and catering establishments and terraces ".

The action also foresees future actions to consolidate pedestrianization: "During 2019 and 2020 the City Council sought funding to carry out the urban interventions necessary for the conversion of the area, the redevelopment of the Glorieta and the improvement of the pavement and lighting de Marqués de Campo ", projects currently in the drafting phase and included in the Plan Plan of the Alicante Provincial Council.

  2. Lizzie says:

    Bravo, and Bravo.
We finally enjoy this fantastic and super beautiful avenue.
And I don't deeply believe that commerce is complaining.
Of course we need more parking near the city. But that is another matter…. !

  3. Paloma says:

All the cities of the world with pedestrian zones gain in attractiveness and the businesses of those areas also. I support the idea and wish to see it very soon!

  4. fernando aramburu says:

    The street is a ruin.
This has reinforced the restoration in the Marina of Denia. We are in the hands of an ignorant mayor in everything related to the problems of the neighbors. But very savvy to raise his salary 40% in the first plenary session after the elections.

  5. Maria says:

Great initiative of the city council, the inhabitants are delighted with the pedestrianization.
