The Moors and Christians of Dénia will opt for a Festival of National Tourist Interest by recovering a procession from the XNUMXth century

February 20 from 2023 - 10: 36

At the closing of the Cultural Days scheduled on the occasion of Mig Any 2023, the president of the FEMMICC Denia, Sonia Pérez, made a solemn statement by which the FEMMICC board of directors promised to recover a civic-religious procession dated in the year 1556 With this new differentiating element in the party, it will be possible to request the declaration of the Moors and Christians of Dénia as a Festival of National Tourist Interest.

The Mig Any 2023 Cultural Days can be considered a success due to the events proposed and the public attendance, which has always responded, both in the historical exhibition of festive costumes and in the children's Mig Any and the exhibition of drawings, or the cultural conferences held in the auditorium of the House of Culture Denia

Precisely, after finishing the second and last scheduled conference, and as a closing of these cultural days, the president of the Federation of Moors and Christians, Sonia Pérez, made all the partygoers participate in a decision made by the FEMMICC Dénia board.

«Given the good reception that these cultural days have had and always looking towards the future, this board of directors is going to launch the project of recovery and recreation of the procession "of when the Moors arrive at the salt marsh" dated in the year 1556» Perez noted.

Remembering the pirate attack on Dénia

In the referenced year, 1556, the population of Dénia was brutally attacked by Barbary pirates. Only thanks to the fact that the population was able to take refuge inside the walls of the castle, they were able to repel the brutal attack without any fatalities among the Dianense neighbors. A fact that is documented in different studies carried out at the time.

In gratitude and joy for this courageous act, every September 10 a religious, festive, civic and cultural procession was held to commemorate this event. The first of these took place in 1556 and was repeated for a period of 100 consecutive years, until 1665. Then this procession disappeared and was never performed again.

Well then, the intention of the FEMMICC board of directors is now to recover this procession, both in its religious aspect and in its cultural and historical aspect. In its staging, it wants to involve the cultural associations of Dénia and also obtain the maximum possible institutional support, since this event, once consolidated, could become the differentiating act that will allow them to choose to be a Festival of National Tourist Interest.

The work team to carry out this proposal is already formed and as of March 2023, meetings with the different groups will begin to begin organizing it and making it a reality so that it can be released on September 9, 2023.

"Culture and history will always give us great joy"

The FEMMICC Dénia board of directors has stated that they are "very excited about the project and that they are going to work to consolidate this event so that they can soon be eligible for the distinction."
