March or "September"? The debate facing the Fallas is not about COVID, but about money

May 13 from 2021 - 07: 50

Since representatives of the Fallas of the Valencian capital were positioned to schedule the festivities during the first week of September, and after receiving the approval of the Conselleria de Sanitat, the debate on when to celebrate the Josefín festivities has lit the streets of Dénia. But, and perhaps more importantly, it has also reached the courts, which have much to say.

The question seems as simple as choosing between September or March to celebrate the Fallas. The first arguments that go through the head in favor of September are promoting tourism this second summer of the pandemic and being able to go to one with the Valencian capital. The simplest argument that can go through your head to be in favor of March is to continue with the tradition and do the Fallas on the date that corresponds, and perhaps with fewer restrictions.

But it is not a simple debate at all.

Why September?

For starters, you don't have to choose between two dates. You have to choose a single date that now allows it to be from September 2021, but it can also be in March 2022. A single date to celebrate the Fallas that the pandemic stole from us.

It is practically impossible to pretend that everyone celebrates the holidays together, as it is the time of local holidays and each municipality will choose what suits them best. And it makes sense. València, capital, look after them and have not asked the other municipalities, so it is fair that the localities look for the date that suits them best without having to imitate anyone.

The business of the Fallas

Among those who are in favor of celebrating them during the second half of 2021 are Fallas artists and part of the sectors that obtain an economic benefit as a result of the celebration, such as florists and hospitality establishments. For artists, whose companies have suffered greatly from the effects of the pandemic, it is vital to burn the ninots to rebuild and generate income, for which they are now pressing after obtaining the approval of Sanitat, sometimes even threatening to terminate the contract to take care of the plantà.

Now, it is not so easy to get the money to pay for the monuments, and here lies the main inconvenience for the celebration in any week other than that of San José. Most of the positions of the Dianenses commissions, as this wording has been able to know, are betting on waiting until March to remove the Fallas. And they do not do it out of false hopes that the pandemic has passed, but because of a purely economic issue.

"Town failures are paid by commissions, not subsidies"

After consulting several representatives of different commissions of Dénia, they all agree that it is not feasible to burn a monument "to be fulfilled", for which an enormous investment was made in its day, and later to demand from the members of its failures again registration sums. If they burn in September, they should ask their commissions for money so that just 5 months later they can plant and burn another monument without practically any event involved.

"The town failures are paid by the commissions, not the subsidies," the Fallera Mayor tells Dénia.com of one of the dianenses failures. In fact, already An economic effort has been asked of their falleros and falleras during all this time without being able to celebrate anything, so they would refuse to burn what they have worked so hard for before their time to pay for a new monument again in the short term. And, as they indicated, the subsidies they receive are not enough.

Two plants in a row would cause the inscriptions to suffer during the following periods and, therefore, according to these charges, the money they could invest in monuments, which in the long run would affect the Fallas artists sector in the same way.

Who is going to represent a hasty Fallas?

Another big stumbling block is what will happen to the charges. According to what they tell us, no one would want to be Fallera Mayor or President of a falla whose exercise lasted 5 months. And not only that, but he would dismiss his position by planting a symbolic and minor monument for the little collection that they would have time to do, as we mentioned.

One option could be to repeat the same charges with an extra 5-month mini-exercise. But, with the option of waiting until March to plant and burn YOUR fault, it seems unnecessary to repeat and more profitable to wait.

A complex debate whose sides seem to be formed by the businessmen of the sector on the one hand, betting on September, and by the falleros and falleras of the majority of commissions, betting on March. The City Council has said that it will not position itself and it will accept what the Fallas decide, and the Local Board is also expected to call a vote for this purpose once the new presidency is elected. In fact, That vote almost existed a few months ago and it was suspended due to, supposedly, the little support for the option of holding Fallas in September..

Be that as it may, it is a very tricky debate that needs careful and thorough reading.
