En Christmas One of the most historic ice cream parlours in Dénia has closed down, leaving a huge gap in the centre of the city. The void is noticeable in the most central section of Marqués de Campo, but now a new element occupies it. Where there used to be a terrace full of people enjoying an ice cream, a construction container has been installed for a few days now. Miquel Gelater lowered the shutters, but just a few weeks later it has been raised again with a very different purpose.
Another business closes its doors in Marqués de Campo, another business opens them. It is a constant in the last 15 years. It seems that few things remain stable. If you walk down the street looking at the premises and look back, you will discover that few have withstood the passage of time. But the activity does not disappear, it is transformed. The spaces, with some exceptions, are still full of life, but with new blood and even in new markets.
What used to be a bank now sells frozen yogurt or is a dentist. Or the other way around, what used to be a clothing and sports accessories store is now a bank. Another former clothing store is now occupied by a waffle shop. From a supermarket to a herbalist, from a cinema to a discotheque, from a café to a future fast food restaurant. And from an ice cream shop, La Miquel, to… another clothing store.
The new life of the Marquis of Campo
The main pedestrian artery of Dénia suffers closures, like so many other neighbourhoods, but they don't last long in recent times. It is rare to find a premises in Marqués de Campo that is not occupied shortly after becoming vacant. The attraction that the area has is undeniable and it seems that at the moment there is always a company willing to move in.
What is happening with the old El Comercio restaurant. We miss the restaurant and the friendly staff and it is a great historic building.
See that because I'm getting old and my world is ending, friends, family, businesses, bars, cinemas, table football disappear, in other words, I too will disappear with the wind.
