Observe the sky of Dénia to capture a comet that returns to Earth after 50.000 years

February 17 from 2023 - 10: 35

At the moment there is an old comet in the skies of Dénia. The last time he visited Earth was 50.000 years ago. He has been around the sun and is on his way back to the far reaches of the solar system. It is not a very spectacular comet, since it cannot be seen with the naked eye. You'll need a telescope to see it, but the time it's been out has generated a lot of media interest. The member of the Costa Blanca Astronomical Society, David Ord, took the image shown here in the early morning of January 25 in the northern sky with his camera and telescope. A galaxy can also be seen in the upper left corner of the image.

Dénia is also now part of the Global Meteor Network that monitors the night sky in search of these celestial bodies. The Astronomical Society of the Costa Blanca joined the Astronomy Association of Marina Alta and bought a special camera for tracking meteors. The data is sent to the Global Meteor Network every day, who use it along with data from around the world to conduct scientific research. "The number of these that pass each night is surprising, even when there are no meteor showers," they point out from the Astronomical Society. Here are a couple of recent examples.

In addition to meteors, the camera captures any other movement in the sky over a small area in the southwest. "We have seen the Starlink, a part of a Chinese rocket breaking off, as well as fireballs and meteors."
