A second access through Baix la Mar and an elevator: the very near future of Dénia Castle

May 08 from 2022 - 08: 30

The Castle Dénia, the most important symbol of the city (with the permission of the port) throughout history, has been undergoing major changes in recent years that have led to the recovery of its former splendor. The last ones to be made, announced this week, will mark a before and after in the monument, making it much more accessible to residents and visitors.

The Castle of Dénia: the evolution of the monument from the XNUMXth to the XNUMXst century
El Verger Alt opens its doors: 2.000 meters more to visit the Castle in front of the port

As announced a few days ago, Dénia City Council has put out to tender the works to restore a sector that has been neglected and inaccessible for years. After recovering in 2020 the nearly 2.000 meters of the Verger Alt that until now were closed to visitors, now the goal is to reconquer the Verger Baix, the Portal dels Reis and the Torre del Galliner. This is almost 3.000 square meters of extra surface that the castle will gain.

Among all the new projected interventions, the one that will suppose an immense change is the creation of an access from the public road through the Torre del Galliner. Until now, the only entrance to Dénia Castle was the one from the Les Roques neighbourhood. However, this project will create a door that will connect the maritime façade and the Baix la Mar neighborhood with the interior of the monument.

A monument open to the sea

The advantages of this new entry are endless. To begin with, it offers the possibility of visiting the castle to those who enjoy the nearby shopping and leisure areas without deviating from their route. On the other hand, there is a greater offer of parking, both private and public, in that location. Those who travel to Dénia to visit the castle will be able to park more easily in Baix la Mar (bearing in mind that it is a few meters from the public parking by Miguel Hernández) than in Les Roques, where it is practically impossible.

In the same way, it will be more accessible for people with reduced mobility, since the installation of an elevator is contemplated in the reform, which, in this way, allows avoiding the endless slopes of the main entrance.

They are not the only planned interventions. It is hoped with the works in the Verger Baix and the Torre del Galliner to recover some very rich spaces that have been kept closed, and return them to a state closer to the original. With this, the Castle of Dénia will be closer to what in its time was a symbol that aroused the admiration of those who approached it.

The works, which will have a budget of 790.457,84 euros (almost 500.000 of these provided by the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda), have an execution period of 10 months, so this great transformation of the Dianense emblem will be will give sooner than imagined.

A huge senseless waste of money with high costs to maintain the system. There was the popular tourist train, which also took the disabled to the top of the castle and also contributed €3 to its operation. So: tourist train instead of elevator.

  2. Altea says:

Excellent news that is invested in the restoration of the Dénia Castle and its accessibility.

    An outsider.

    Well, I think it's a GREAT idea.

    • Luis says:

Do you know that there is already an elevator, installed on the other side, that does not work? Do you want to pay another one so that the same thing happens?

  4. Francisca says:

It is no longer urgent to start up the project for the site of the old ambulatory in Marques de Campo, it should be finished before summer, now there is a sunny spot that scares away anyone, it is more important, there is little left of the castle to visit the truth and not I think it is the biggest attraction in Denia, more trees and more green in the streets, that is what I need

  5. Luis says:

"Denia Castle will be closer to what in its time was a symbol that aroused the admiration of those who approached it"... That was centuries ago when the castle existed now there are four poorly maintained stones, not like the one in Peñiscola that looks magnificent because it is taken care of. This is construction land look they could fix it and rebuild it but the only thing they can think of is to surround it with elevators. For when the escalators to see the four stones? With how beautiful they could have it, not only the Castle but the entire neighborhood. The rest of Denia does not deserve to be or visited, Calle Campos is the wall, beyond that wall there is nothing to see.
