A multitude of Caretta caretta turtles are released in Dénia

05 October 2024 - 14: 53

This morning the release of Caretta caretta turtles (known as 'loggerheads') took place on Les Albaranes beach in Dénia. A total of 29 turtles born at the end of summer 2023 in the town were released.

The loggerhead turtle is the smallest and most abundant sea turtle in the Mediterranean. It can reach a length of approximately 120 cm and a weight of 120 kg. For this reason, the turtles had been collected at birth to form part of a conservation programme for the species, which favours the probability of the animal's survival.

Newborn sea turtles (Caretta caretta) are very vulnerable to predators due to their small size. In fact, it is estimated that in the first few days mortality reaches 90% and that only 1 in 1.000 specimens will reach adulthood. They have now been safely returned to their natural habitat.

Some of the organizing and collaborating entities of the event have been the Dénia City Council, the Fundació Oceanogràfic, the Universitat Politècnica de València, Universitat de València or Baleària.
