18 March 2024 - 13: 45

The Mayor of Dénia, Vicent Grimalt, the Councilor for Culture, Raúl García, the Councilor for the Environment, Sandra Gertrúdix, and the Mayor's Councilor, Marta Gasco, visited this morning of Monday, March 18, the Victoria catamaran of oceanic sailor Alex Pella. The ship, after a few months of fine-tuning, has returned to the port of Dénia, where it will be based, remaining moored next to the Museum of the Sea, on the Explanada Cervantes.

Alex Pella is a solo offshore racing specialist. In 2014, he won the Ruta del Rum regatta, being the first and only Spaniard to win a transoceanic regatta alone. In 2017, Pella made the fastest circumnavigation of the world, and together with his companions and the sophisticated Maxi-Trimaran IDEC Sport, won the Jules Verne trophy, for the fastest sailing circumnavigation of the planet, in forty days, twenty-three hours. , thirty minutes and thirty seconds. According to Alex Pella, "we are preparing the round-the-world record, which is a project by Juan Sebastián el Cano. "I am delighted to be able to have the ship's headquarters in Dénia, and to be able to be here and prepare here."

After showing the boat to the mayor and the councillors, Alex Pella indicated that in the following weeks they will have to finish having the catamaran ready, in order to make the record for the return to Menorca in May, in July we will make the record for the return to Spain , between Bilbao and Barcelona. In November we will take the Discovery route, which is the original route that Columbus took, setting sail from Huelva, whose route is La Gomera, San Salvador (Bahamas), and in winter the ship will stay in Miami. Between February and November 2025, the ship will be in Dénia, where we will be preparing to sail around the world in November 2025.

Vicent Grimalt was delighted with the visit to the boat, and commented that “the catamaran is impressive, not only because of its size, but also in terms of its sustainability. For me it is a satisfaction and a joy that Alex has decided that the base of the Victoria is in Dénia, especially because of the importance that our port has for the city and what it represents for us." On the other hand, Grimalt has also added that "on many occasions I have discussed with Alex the possibility of making the port of Dénia a project similar to that of the ports in northern France. We should take as an example how they live the sea there, learn how they live facing the sea, and to be able to create a municipal public nautical school so that not only the Dianenses, but also the people of the region could learn and enjoy the sea, the sail, because we live in a city whose main square is the port.
