They find in Les Marines an amphora belonging to pre-Roman times

August 12 from 2020 - 13: 37

After the fortuitous discovery, communicated to the Archaeological Museum by a private individual, of the remains of a sunken ship very close to the coast and scarcely 3 m deep (km 2 of the Marines), the Local Police notified of the superficial discovery, within the same area, of an amphora, very close to the edge, for which a device for protection and recovery of the piece was immediately activated

The operation was carried out last Thursday, August 6, by the Center for Underwater Archeology of the Valencian Community and with the collaboration of the Local Police of Dénia, which made its resources available to the action: boat, vehicle, technical and human teams.

The amphora, practically complete, and a fragmented part of a similar one and some fragments of a common ceramic vase and wood samples were recovered. Likewise, the inspection of the wreck was carried out.

The find, according to the report issued by the Center for Subaquatic Archeology, is an amphora "Ribera TIPUS 1-3: Amphoras with a flat or almost flat mouth, sinuous profile with two inflections in the body". These are pre-Roman amphoras, dated in Valencian lands in the XNUMXth century BC

The origin has not yet been determined, but the report indicates that some specimens could be Punic and that they were perhaps taken as models by the Iberians.
